Strange Beauty Influences

When researching for Strange Beauty I already had Spanish director, Guillermo Del Toro's fairytale story 'Pan's Labyrinth'. I have always been inspired by Del Toro's work. I have recently purchased his book The Cabinet Of Curiosities, the book has insights of his ideas and the creature making process which I find will benefit for this project. The make-up and prosthetics have always inspired me and I feel that this is my chance to create a prosthetic piece based on fairytale elements.

Guillermo Del Toro's - The Cabinet Of Curiosities:

The film is not like your regular fairytale story, it is more darker, twisted and beautiful which I find very inspiring to watch. I really admire the creature designs especially the Faun. He has been designed to almost look tree like, where as his facial features and horns are almost goat like.

Pan's Labyrinth - Make-up and Special Effects

The film is set in Spain 1944, around the ending of the Civil War. The young girl Ofelia and her mother Carmen, move into the house with her newly married husband named Vidal; he is a Captain in Franco's army. Ofelia struggles to adopt to her new life living with her mother and Vidal so she seeks refuge in the mysterious labyrinth behind the house. Pan is a magical creature that watches over Ofelia. He announces that she is the long, lost princess of a magical kingdom and in order to return, she must accomplish three dangerous tasks.

I have also recently come across the Polish fetish fashion designer, Nika Danielska. I was instantly inspired and fell in love with her designs, I have a lot of ideas for designing the prosthetic piece. I feel looking at Pan's Labyrinth and Nika Danielska's work have inspired me to take some elements and combine them with my own ideas to create my own unique visual piece.

Inspiration For Horns

I have looked at Antelope horns for inspiration as I really like the shape, structure and texture. This is something that I will definitely consider when designing and creating my h

'The Old Demon'

I found this prosthetic piece with horns which inspired me to create horns for mine. The horns are made out of slushed resin and backed with foam to create this effect. I find this piece of work really inspiring as it is a very realistic piece due to the skin texture and lines. Even the horns look life like, which is something I hope to achieve when creating some for my piece.

This piece has been entirely created out of foam latex. This is another option for me instead of creating foams out of resin.

Again these are resin made horns that have been moulded from real animal horns. The resin made horns are designed to be lightweight so that they can be worn on the head.

I have also looked at the film Maleficent for inspiration for creating horns. Here it shows the horns gently sitting in the hair and I some how feel that this look isn't something I want to go with. I really like the shape of the horns but I feel I need a base for my horns to sprout/ grow from.

Here I have looked at Hellboy for some inspiration for the base of the horns. I feel that when it comes down to making my facial prosthetic piece, I should create a base where the horns will sit into.
